Las Vegas; live there or visit?

February 22nd, 2007

Las Vegas has a bit of an identity disorder. Not too long ago, Vegas was advertised as a great place for families to visit on vacation, but recently the lure seems to be that Vegas is a place for adults to frolic without fear of persecution. Whatever reason attracts visitors to book a vacation in Las Vegas, one thing is for sure: it’s a fun place to visit.

Getting to Las Vegas is quite simple. For people who do not live within driving distance, direct flights travel from most major airports directly into Las Vegas International Airport. Airfare is relatively inexpensive, and many vacationers who book their flights along with a hotel room or rental car will be pleased to receive a substantial savings on the cost. Hotel rooms in Las Vegas are usually available with the exception of special events such as a huge convention or on New Year’s Eve. Even then, however, most visitors can find a reasonable hotel room as long as they are willing to stay in a hotel which is not located directly on The Strip. After all, Las Vegas is more than just The Strip, although many visitors may not realize this. When planning Vegas vacation, it may be worth it to compare some of the prices of hotels in the surrounding area, off The Strip.

There are innumerous things to do in Las Vegas. Simply walking up and down The Strip can be an event in itself, what with all the sites and sounds of Sin City. Amazing things happen around the clock in Vegas, because the city truly never sleeps. Las Vegas is an ideal vacation destination for people who are looking for a trip packed with stories that they can regale friends with back home…or instead that they would rather keep to themselves because they are so uncharacteristic of their normal behavior. Bars, dance clubs, and so-called gentlemen’s clubs pepper the Las Vegas area, and with an abundance of drink specials and free admission deals there is no shortage of parties to enjoy while vacationing in Vegas.

Las Vegas is not entirely focused on a party atmosphere. The entertainment in Las Vegas can be surprisingly good. Shows which once toured on Broadway have a way of winding up at hotels on The Strip, and plenty of famous entertainers make their rounds in Vegas. Even some of the cheesier lounge acts found within the run-down casinos can be great fun. Many of the hotel-casinos in Las Vegas offer exceptional restaurants, some of which are highly acclaimed within the culinary industry. Las Vegas is a place where vacationers can live the high life, no matter what their status is at home. Everyone has the potential to be a High Roller in Las Vegas; limo rental is cheap, room upgrades are easily obtained, and with the prevalent gambling there is always the chance that a person may leave Las Vegas with more money than what he or she brought along. Of course, losses in gambling far outweigh the winnings, but the chance of hitting it rich can certainly add to the excitement of this vacation destination.

Many couples head to Las Vegas to combine their weddings with a honeymoon, and Vegas is more than able to oblige. Couples can choose a dilapidated chapel near a busy street, or instead go all out with an elegant chapel within one of the ritzy resorts. The beauty of Las Vegas is that the city is designed for newlyweds: getting a marriage license is hassle-free and there are no reservations required at the majority of the wedding chapels. After the wedding, couples can go enjoy all that Vegas has to offer without so much as having to step foot on a plane. It is no wonder so many couples flock to Vegas to conduct their nuptials.

One thing potential visitors to Las Vegas need to realize is that Vegas can be hot. During the summer months, the oppressive heat of Las Vegas can easily be likened to the burst of heat which rushes out of an oven when the door is first opened. Most visitors realize that Vegas is in the desert and that the desert can be hot, but people who have never experienced this degree of hot might find themselves unpleasantly surprised at how difficult it can be to walk The Strip in the heat of the day. For this reason, vacationers should carry plenty of water and dress appropriately. There is nothing like heat stroke to ruin a vacation. On the other hand, folks who realize that Las Vegas gets ridiculously hot may not realize that it can also get chilly in the winter – certainly not Midwest chilly, but chilly nonetheless – so whatever season a traveler plans to visit Vegas in, it would be a wise move to check the weather forecast beforehand.

It should also be mentioned that even though The Strip is indeed dazzling and exciting, Las Vegas Boulevard is a busy street. Vegas residents have a tendency to lose patience with wandering tourists quite quickly, so it is advisable for vacationers to pay attention to what they are doing and not meander into the street in an attempt to snap a better photo or get a better look at a street performer on the other side of the road. Visitors can take advantage of any of the convenient methods of transportation up and down The Strip including free transports from one casino to the other, and if vacationers do not plan on venturing far from The Strip a rental car may be a waste of money. The Strip is designed to be all-inclusive for vacationers, and people can find just about everything they need within walking distance from their hotel room.

Las Vegas is a great vacation destination. The natural scenery may leave something to be desired for people who do not care for desert landscape, but the man-made scenery and activities are simply amazing. Where else can vacationers travel from a pyramid to a castle in mere minutes, all while rubbing elbows with showgirls and Elvis impersonators?
